Hardback, 7.5 x 5 inches. In maroon full polished calf leather binding, with decorative gilt paneled boards, raised and gilt banding to spine, with gilt lettering and floral decoration. Top page edges red. Marbled endpapers. In stunning near fine condition. Sumptuous leather binding. A couple of very slight minor surface marks to boards. Original endpaper leaf bound opposite title page, inscribed “Alice Eastbourne Hooton, from Mary Coleridge. Hanwell Rectory, January 10th 1875.” 348pp + 39pp adverts (dated Feb. 1874.) Mary Elizabeth Coleridge (23 September 1861 – 25 August 1907) was the daughter of Arthur Duke Coleridge. Family friends included Robert Browning, Alfred, Lord Tennyson, John Millais and Fanny Kemble. She was the great-grandniece of Samuel Taylor Coleridge and the great niece of Sara Coleridge, the author of Phantasmion. A British novelist and poet who also wrote essays and reviews. She wrote poetry under the pseudonym Anodos, taken from George MacDonald; other influences on her were Richard Watson Dixon and Christina Rossetti. Robert Bridges, the Poet Laureate, described her poems as 'wonderously beautiful… but mystical rather and enigmatic'.
