Cream silk cloth endpapers. In very good condition. Some minor darkening to silver metalwork. Repair to front hinge, with added thin strip of velvet. Partial cracks to velvet at ends of spine on rear hinge. Painted bookplate to front “Virginie De St. Aldegonde, Victurnien de Mortemart. Juilliet 1854.” Minor stain to top corner of pages from title to approx p30.Some minor light foxing to edges of plates, else inside pages very clean and tight throughout. Else a stunning copy. 341pp. Illustrated with 3 full page colour plates, a decorative coloured title page, and B&W frontis plate. Page borders are decorated with floral and pictorial designs. Inserted bore halftitle is a handpainted colour bookplate. Mademoiselle Virginie de St-Aldegonde (1834-1900), later Duchesse de Rochechouart-Mortemart, She was the daughter of Louis de Rochechouart, Count of Mortemart, a wealthy French aristocrat. She inherited a large fortune from her great-grandmother, the founder of the Veuve Clicquot Champagne house. She was known for her involvement in feminist causes and charities, politics, sport hunting, automobiles and the arts, and was an accomplished author and sculptor.
