Large hardback, approx 10 x 6 ins. Quarter bound in dark brown polished calf leather to spine and corners, dark purple cloth boards. Decorative blind embossed edging to leather on boards, with raised banding, gilt decorations and lettering to spine. Red speckled page edges, marbled endpapers. In very good condition. Professionally rebacked on spine. Some fading to cloth on boards. Corners slightly bumped.Inscription to front endpaper “Explanation of the terms used in the Domesday Book...”. Neat inscription to top of title page “J. Stile.” Note pasted to title page “Note on a Bronze Celt, or Palstave, in the Exeter Museum.” Title page and endpapers foxed. Map at front is NW corner only, cut along bottom and side, with repaired tear to inner corner. Some minor spots and handling marks to inside pages, else inside pages very clean and tight. Plates clean and bright. Else a very good clean and tight copy. Scarce. 906 pp. Partial fold out map to front (backed with cloth). Illustrated with 13 full-page lithographic & steel-engraved views, (Churches.: Crewkerne, Beaminster, Ford Abbey, Cheddington Copse, Axminster, etc.) and 3 plates of Effigies.
