This is a landmark document of its era and belongs on the shelf on any serious naturalist or geologist, if only for the beautiful illustrations. A spectacular comprehensive account of natural history, gorgeously illustrated throughout in six parts. The mixture of science and hearsay and gossip is a heady one and gives us a lovely picture of the joy associated with the discoveries of the many naturalists over this period, although the descriptions of the peoples of the world are distinctly old fashioned.
