In maroon polished morocco leather fine binding by “Birdsall, Northampton.” With raised banding and gilt decoration and lettering to spine, decorative gilt paneled boards and inner dentelles. All page edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. In very good near fine condition. Some minor darkening to spine, with a faint dark stain to front and rear boards. Some slight minor rubbing to corners, else cover lovely and smart. Gilt bright. Endpapers clean, some minor darkening around edges, binders stamp in gilt to inner front edge. Neat inscription to blank prelim page, “E. F. Talbot-Pontoulz, from Dora, Sept 26. 1903.” Small stain mark to top edge of frontis plate and title page (guarded.) One small mark to bottom corners of p222-3, else inside pages all clean and tight. Else a very good clean and tight copy. 546pp. Profusely illustrated with 48 b&w engraved plates by Cruikshank, Leech, Tenniel, Barham and Du Maurier. Richard Harris Barham, English novelist and humorous poet, better known by his nom de plume of Thomas Ingoldsby, was born at Canterbury. The series of grotesque metrical tales known as The Ingoldsby Legends became very popular, were published in a collected form and have since passed through numerous editions.
