Hardback, approx 8 x 5 inches. In dark cream cloth covers with gilt lettering and flag design to spine and black and red lettering and pictorial design to front. Black endpapers. In very good condition. Sound, tight binding with excellent page-block. Some darkening to cover; a couple of small splits to cloth on corners of boards and spine,glue repair to chipped bottom end. Small partial split to cloth on bottom of rear hinge with small chips to middle. Endpapers darkened with foxing to prelims and title page. Some light spots to map. A couple occasional spots to pages else pages clean and tight. Fold out maps with some light spots else all very clean and tight. Overall an excellent first edition copy. 498pp. With colour fold out map at front, 3 other maps and 4 plans. Winston Churchill recounts his capture near Estcourt, his period of imprisonment at Pretoria and subsequent escape to Delagoa Bay. Thereafter the correspondence concerns the campaign in Natal and operations for the relief of Ladysmith.
