Hardback, 8.5 x 6 inches. Quarter bound in white vellum to spine and corners, and marbled paper to boards. Leather label to spine lettered in gilt. Dark green endpapers. Top page edges gilt. In very good condition. Rear corner edges a little rubbed, vellum darkened and rubbed. Bottom edge of spine label rubbed. Bookplate to front endpaper “Gilmour of Lundin and Montrave.” No penned inscriptions. Pages and plates all very clean, bright and tight throughout, no marks or spots to pages. Else a very good clean and tight copy. 332pp. Illustrated with 16 B&W full-page plates, and 4 full-page colour plates. Thornton was a keen sportsman. Thoroughly English, but an inveterate Francophile, it was his privilege, during the height of the Napoleonic Wars, to be allowed to travel and hunt in France, where he met Napoleon himself. After Waterloo, Thornton settled in France, ending his days in Paris in 1823.
