Some minor wear to cover; corners bumped, some rubbing to edges of cloth. Small nicks to corners of spine at top end, chip and small split at bottom end. Inscription to front endpapers “Ingo Grimm, Grocker Hill House, Chichester.” One or two minor handling/thumb marks to page edges else pages all very clean and tight throughout. A very good 1st edition copy. 328pp. Profusely illustrated with B&W figures in text, with over 55 full-page plates, including frontispeices and title page vignette. This is the only work ever devoted to the crossbow, the most important weapon of mediaeval warfare, and still a popular arm for sporting, hunting, and target use. Additionally it deals with every related weapon, from the siege engines, balistas and a catapults of the ancients to such weapons as the Turkish bow and the Chinese repeating crossbow. The author contributed many valuable chapters on the construction and management of crossbows, particularly those for sporting purposes. The book is full of anecdote and interest. The illustrations range from contemporary battle pictures to scale constructional plans - a unique work of reference.
