Hardback, 9 x 6.5 inches. Full vellum binding with gilt lettering to spine and design to front. Top edges gilt. In very good condition. Some minor darkening to spine, a couple of minor handling marks to cover, some light foxing to endpapers, signed page (by author and artist) and inside pages all clean and bright. Colour plates clean and bright. Bookplate to front “Mina Bowater,” (the Bowater bookplate is by renowned gun engraver Malcolm Appleby, see note.) Else a very clean and tight copy. Malcolm Appleby turned his Silver Trust commission towards a more peaceful end: the pieces are lavishly engraved. From his workshop, in a converted railway station near Aberdeen, he says, ‘I like to keep my eye on the outside world.’ But he is a far from detached observer; his engravings contain opinions. Appleby trained at four art schools, including the Royal College of Art. Prices for a one-off commission start around £2,000. 195pp. With 8 colour plates and 2 b&W vignette illustrations by John Nash.
