Malcolm Appleby is best known as a gun engraver, but he turned his Silver Trust commission towards a more peaceful end: a ‘conversation piece’ commemorative salt shaker, pepper mill and mustard pot. The results recall a time when spices were a precious cargo; the pieces are lavishly engraved (see above) and all the bases are carefully wrought. From his workshop, in a converted railway station near Aberdeen, he says, ‘I like to keep my eye on the outside world.’ But he is a far from detached observer; his engravings contain opinions. A tree is depicted with its leaves falling prematurely as a conservationist reminder, a unicorn skull represents the death of innocence. ‘The mustard pot is full of hot stuff, with dragons emerging from the primeval mud,’ he says. Appleby trained at four art schools, including the Royal College of Art. Prices for a one-off commission start around £2,000. 13 vols. Illustrated with B&W plates by various artists, and photogravure portrait of the author.
