In full polished-calf leather bindings, blind paneled boards, raised and gilt banding to spines, with extensive gilt decorations, and two leather labels lettered and numbered in gilt. MArbled page edges, plain endpapers. In very good conditions. Stunning fine leather bindings. A couple of small handling marks to boards, some minor fading to edges of front board on vol.3. Endpapers foxed, bookplates “Alex McCracken” to fronts, and inscribed neatly on top corners of title pages, and dated 1969. Pgs 1-10 darkened in vol.1, some mild foxing spots to pages thoughout, a few odd pages with some heavier darkening and foxing. Large folding map is clean and bright, but tears in middle where folds ‘X’, where has been tightly bound in from centre. Otherwise an excellent set in beautiful fine binding. 3 volumes. Complete with all engravings and folding maps and charts. Large folding map of Caledonia; Plan of the Roman Camps at Normandykes, and Fort at Clattering-bridge; Roman Tuessis on the Spey; Varis, and British Hill Fort on Barrahill. Only three volumes were completed and published. The author was a Scottish antiquarian and political writer. Caledonia, although unfinished at the time of his death, is regarded as his greatest work.
