When Vol.1 was published "the general acclamation was disturbed by the scandal of the famous chapters 15-16, which showed Gibbon in the role of the fifth-century pagan philosopher deriding Christianity in discreet sarcasms"....."The "Decline & Fall" is literature as well as history and his pessimism sets the tone for the work. His detestation of enthusiasm is a mark of his age, and he is no less severe on pagan than on Christian superstition. Here again his cynicism adds a spice to the work which relates it to literature rather than history. His accuracry in the use of his sources has not been questioned."(Chambers).
