Hardback, 7.5 x 5 inches. In green blind stamped cloth with gilt lettering, blind paneled boards in earlier design (with embossed decoration to centers of boards). Brown endpapers. In very good condition. Some minor rubbing to edges, corners slightly bumped with small nicks. Small bumps to middle leading edges of boards. Ends of spine rubbed with small nicks to top end and thin chip to bottom. Some minor handling to cloth but overall clean and bright. Slight darkening to endpapers. Bookplate to front endpaper “William Arthur Durnford.” No penned inscriptions. One or two almost negligible spots to pages, a couple of minor foxing spots to pages nr plate, else pages very clean and tight throughout. An excellent early copy of this famous title. xxi + 458pp. No rear catalogue. Illustrated with one diagram folding-plate at p91. Darwin’s critical work on the theory of evolution. This is the edition in which the term “evolution” was used for the first time, this edition was also the last one that Darwin was to revise himself before his death, with a new chapter 7, which was inserted to confute the views of the Roman Catholic biologist St. George Mivart.
