4 Volumes. Hardback, Tall 8vo, 8.5 x 5.5 inches. Full maroon polished calf leather bindings; black leather spine labels lettered in gilt, with extensive gilt decoration to spines, and decorative gilt paneled boards and inner dentelles. Marbled endpapers, all page edges gilt. In very good conditions. Some fading and rubbing to spines and edges, corners bumped, some fading and rubbing to boards with a couple of small surface chips to leather. Publishers inscription to front endpaper of vol.1, “Presented to his friend William Upcott Esq. by Richard Bentley.” Inner hinges are slightly cracked between endpapers but binding remains tight and sound. Some minor darkening to edges of a couple of plates, some odd minor light foxing spots. Else very clean and tight copies. Plates clean and bright. 392 & 397pp. / 548 & 520pp. Illustrated with B&W engraved portraits and views. ‘Lavallette’ has 173 EXTRA plates, and ‘Napoleon’ has 198 extra plates, some folding, some coloured, some double-page, most mounted on extra pages. Count Lavallette, (1769-1830), French politician and one of Napoleon’s generals. This volumes deal with the period 1789 to 1805. Important memoirs, being the first-hand account of a trusted staff officer, friend, and connection by marriage of Napoleon.
