Hardback, approx 8.5 x 6 inches. In polished red calf leather binding with elaborate gilt decor to spine. Gilt lettering to black leather spine label. Raised banding. Gilt-paneled with motto “Beati Mundo Corde” to front. Marbled endpapers. All page edges gilt. In very good condition. Some minor darkening to boards, some handling marks, some darkening and rubbing to spine and ends. Some minor rubbing to corners. Bookplate to front “Louis Hughes.” Neat latin inscription to front endpaper “Lenello Landon, 1882.” Minor faint stain to bottom edge of frontis/title, else inside pages and plates all very clean, bright and tight throughout. A beautiful bound copy. 694pp. With two b&w engraved plates, plus engraved title page vignette, and one colour plate “The Statues.” p689. Robert Southey’s the Doctor, etc is a a seven-volume collection of miscellaneous articles and essays, loosely connected by the narrative of Dr. Dove and his horse Nobs. Unfinished at the time of his death, it was published posthumously.
