Complete in 5 volumes. Thick folio - sized volumes ( 27 cm x 33cm). Bound in black buckram binding with vignettes & lettered titles in gold on spines. Marbled endpapers. Beautifully Bound by Birdsall Northampton Binders Beautiful bindings. In very good condition. Some very minor rubbing on edges. Corners very lightly bumped. Inscription on first blank page of volume I. Some light foxing inside, else generally very clean & tight. 318 stunning full-page black & white gravure plates by Lilian M. Medland , with a captioned tissue-guards. 2 large fold-out col. maps and a double-page diagram (Topography of a bird). Title-pages are printed in red and black. List of subscribers 10 pp. / index / scientific index / glossary. A description of each species, with their common and technical names, their etymology, habits and characteristics. Lilian Medland (1880-1955) was born in London, and worked for many years as a nurse in England. Charles Stonham, was a surgeon at Guy’s Hospital where she worked. She also illustrated for the Australian Museum in Sydney, painting 30 species of birds which were issued as postcards and as covers on the Australian museum magazine. Her work is characterised by a detailed scientific knowledge combined with great artistic skill. She married Tom Iredale and illustrated for a number of his books. She also illustrated for William Yarrell, for the Australian Museum, with her painting of the Providence Petrel Pterodroma solandri used on a 1961 Norfolk Island stamp
