Shows that until the eve of the first world war, tradesmen, clergy and manufacturers, as well as land-labourers, were held in bondage to the soil. Much of the book is based not only on documents but also on the reminiscences of old people who remember the self-contained life of rural communities. Period and contemporary photographs, and drawings by the author’s family make up the book’s hundred illustrations.
