Some minor rubbing and handling to boards. Bookplates to front endpapers “Rawson Boddam Crozier.” A couple of tiny foxing spots to pages but overall pages very clean and tight, plates all very clean and bright. An excellent clean and bright set. 6 vols. Illustrated with 109 full-page Copper-Plate engravings, (including 4 ‘New Plates’; Basilisk, Flying Dragon, Platypus, Canada Rat.) This work eventually appeared in the year of Goldsmith’s death, 1774. This is a landmark document of its era and belongs on the shelf on any serious naturalist or geologist, if only for the beautiful illustrations. A spectacular comprehensive account of natural history, gorgeously illustrated throughout in six parts. The mixture of science and hearsay and gossip is a heady one and gives us a lovely picture of the joy associated with the discoveries of the many naturalists over this period, although the descriptions of the peoples of the world are distinctly old fashioned.
