Hardback, approx 9 x 5 (+) inches. In full mottled calf leather binding with gilt decoration and banding to spine, and maroon leather spine label lettered in gilt. Plain endpapers and page edges. In very good condition. A couple of light scratches to boards. Corners and edges a little bumped and rubbed. Some minor spots to endpapers, some minor darkening and slight foxing to plates, small light stain to edge of frontis/title plates. Else a very clean and tight copy. 403pp. With 10 engraved plates, including frontispiece and decorative title page. James Hervey (1714-1758). His style is often bombastic, but he displays a rare appreciation of natural beauty, and his simple piety made him many friends. His earliest work, Meditations and Contemplations, said to have been modelled on Robert Boyle’s Occasional Reflections on various Subjects, within fourteen years passed through as many editions.
