Hardback, approx 8.5 x 6.5 inches. Full calf leather binding. Gilt lettering and date to spine, raised banding. Blind embossed decoration to edges of boards. Grey endpapers, speckled page edges. In good condition. Binding is much later than original printing; Small label to front endpaper “Bound by I. Roberts, Bookseller, Chesterfield,” ca1840. Hinges cracked on outside, professional cloth tape reinforced bound hinges under endpapers. Later endpapers. Original pages darkened, chips/minor tears to margin or main title page, many pages with rubbed edges/chipped corners. Some large stains to pages; p180-230; p250-260. Many small marks and annotations, some neat inscriptions. Some pages missing at start of New Test. Old Test ends at p333, after a couple of unnumbered pages then jumps to p449, S.Matthew. Although pages are with many faults this is a wonderful example of a very scarce early Bible. 555pp. With decorative letterpieces, chapter headings and tailpieces. TOGETHER WITH: Two right profitable and fruitful concordances...,collected by R.F.H. n.d. No pagination. Text in 3 columns. Decorative title page. At the lower margin of the title-page is printed: Cum gratia & Privilegio Regiae Maiestatis. On verso of title-page: "Of the incomparable Treasure of the holy Scriptures...", within wide decorative border. The following page also has a decorative top border, and is entitled:" To the Christian Reader", by T.Grashop (2pp.). The text is in 2 columns. First letter decor. TOGETHER WITH: The New Testament of Our Lord Jesus Christ, dated 1596. The Geneva Bible of 1560 and its later edition are often called The "Breeches" Bible (see: chapter 3 verse 7: "...and they sowed figge tree leues together, and made themselves breeches".
