2 vols.; Tall 8vo; Dark blue cloth with gilt to spine and front.with illustration on front covers in silver. In very good condition. Some rubbing to extremities and minor marks to boards. Corners a little bumped. Fold out maps clean and intact. Else clean and tight copies. Endpapers slightly darkened and slightly cracked between front endpapers. (Vol.2. hinges are cracked front and rear.) Small mark to edges of frontis and title in vol.2. Some very small faint spots else inside pages very clean and tight; maps and plates clean and bright. Very good 1st edition examples. 349 & 338pp. Profusely illustrated with colour and b/w photo plates (some fold out/ double-pg.). Numerous maps, including 3 folding maps in back pocket (vol.2.) The author led the Australsian expedition to explore Antarctica in 1911. Following an accident, himself and one other man attempted to return to base, having to eat some of their dogs on the way. Eventually Mawson was forced to travel the final 100 miles alone and arrived after the ship had left. He and six others spent another winter exploring and finally arrived home in December 1913. His work helped to more accurately fix Magnetic South. This is the scarce first edition of his account of that expedition.
