Two volumes. Size approx 5 x 7.5 inches. Both in green cloth with green printed banding to top and bottom of front boards and spines. Gilt lettering to spines. Pages rough cut - some remain un-cut. Slipcase with morrocco leather & gilt spine label. In very good conditions. Corners are bumped, and some rubbing to edges of spines. A couple of very minor marks to boards else cloth overall very clean and sound. Slipcase very good, a little rubbed at bottom and corners with some very slight fading to spine else excellent. Both endpapers have gilt & leather owners labels to endpapers “Ex Libris, Blairhame”, also with original bookseller labels “Frederick H. Hutt. London.” to corners of endpapers. Further description: Both volumes are mildly cocked. Covers and Spines. present mild, rubbing and darkening. Several short and mild wrinkles to cloth of Front Cover Vol. 1. Foxing to prelims. Several edges trimmed short. Text clean and bright with firm, un-cracked hinges. A delightful copy of this most scarce and elusive First Edition. 247 + 212 +4pp (cat.) The First Edition. One of 750 copies printed, of which only 634 were bound to comprise the First Edition. All Points of Issue present in this copy as per Purdy-p.58; Sadleir-1119. Bound in original Publisher's Green cloth. Horizontal imprinted lines to front cover. Gilt tiled spines. Publisher's imprinted device to rear covers. Housed in Custom Slipcase with gilt titled Morocco label and further in custom chemise. Hardy's first and most notable collection of stories. This copy provenance: "The Blair Copy-from the collection of notable book collector, Natalie K. Blair, who used the name of her sprawling New York estate, Blairhame, on her bookplate which is laid-on to the front pastedown of this copy. A voracious and knowledgeable bibliophile, Mrs. Blair was renowned for acquiring only the finest copies of the 19th century British Titles which she wished to add to her collection."
