Hardback, approx 8.5 x 6 iches. Full calf leather boards with gilt decorations, gilt banding to spine. Top edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. In very good condition. Boards are somwhat worn; spine is later with original boards professionally relaid, front hinge/board professionally reinforced. Spine rubbed and chipped at top end. Edges rubbed, corners chipped. Handling marks and darkening to boards. Bookplate to front “J. Cosmo Melville.” Engraved title and frontis darkened. Some minor handling marks to pages, else clean and tight inside. 78 B&W engraved illustrations including frontis and title page. (Most within text although some have a page to their own.)
