Quarter-Bound Leather bindings dark purple/black polished calf & marbled paper boards, raised and gilt banding to spine, with gilt lettering on twin red leather spine labels, and gilt decorations. Grey endpapers. In very good condition. 11/12 volumes. Lacks Volume 2. Corners bumped and edges rubbed, some rubbing to faces of boards. Some rubbing to spines. A couple of small ‘dings’ and bumps to boards. Some occasional small marks and foxing spots. Engraved plates with some darkening around edges and mild/light foxing. Vol.4 lacks one page p507-508. A couple of small tears to corners of pages in vol.5 p397-399. Also in vol.5 are 4 extra plates not listed (Jack Sheppard & Vincent Eden). Else a very clean and tight set. Beautiful leather binding. 12 volumes. Illustrated with 163 b&w engravings in text. (average 15 plates per vol.) Bentley’s Miscellany carried the first publication of many titles later published in book form. In this set from 1889, some have been published with original illustrations by George Cruikshank, John Leech, etc. Authors include Charles Dickens, Harrison Ainsworth, Thomas Ingoldsby. TheOriginal title pages are retained with original contents pages and catalogues of advertisements at back. Original publication dates are 1837 to 1847. Tipped in to three volumes are letters, by George Cruikshank, Harrison Ainsworth and Rev.Richard Harris Barham.
