Hardback, 8.5 x 5.5 inches. In dark blue cloth with gilt to spine and front. Gilt vignette of tiger on front. Top edge gilt. In very good condition. Corners bumped, edges rubbed, a couple of nicks to ends of spine, some soiled patches on leading edges of boards and to spine.Neat inscription to front endpaper “Ashton Bond.” with bookseller label opposite “Henry Wood, Bath.” Some occasional small marks and foxing spots. Else a clean and tight copy. 338pp. Prof. ills. with b&w photographs and a map. Patterson was a famous “White hunter” and the title piece from this book is a rather famous story about a pack of man-eating lions that threatened the development of the Ugandan railway in the early 1900s. Basis for the 1952 film, "Bwana Devil," an adventure movie starring Robert Stack and Nigel Bruce, that has the distinction of being the first film to have been shot in 3-D. Basis too for the 1996 film, "The Ghost and the Darkness," starring Michael Douglas.
