The book describes the ex-President’s expedition into the Brazilian jungle in 1913 as a member of the Roosevelt-Rondon Scientific Expedition, co-named after its leader, Brazilian explorer Cândido Rondon. The book describes the scientific discovery, scenic tropical vistas, and exotic flora and fauna experienced during the adventure. The expedition was also charged with mapping and navigating a river over 600 miles long. An injury early in the trip caused Roosevelt to become very ill and is regarded as shortening his life.
