Hardback, 7.5 x 5 inches. In green blind stamped cloth with gilt lettering and decoration to spine, blind paneled boards. Brown endpapers. In very good condition. Nice bright cloth. Bumps to corners and ends of spine with some minor marks to rear. Edges of endpapers faded and hinges slightly cracked. Bookseller stamp to verso of endpaper “Maglachlan & Stewart, Edinburgh.” Some darkening to endpapers and title page, else inside pages very clean and tight throughout. 7 heliotype plates & 21 other illustrations.vi + 374 pp + Cat.4 pp.(dated November, 1872) + 28pp (later cat) dated July 1882. “This is an important member of the evolutionary set, and it was written, in part at least, as a confutation of the idea that the facial muscles of expression in man were a special endowment”. “... Murray published 7,000 copies of the first edition on November 26, 1872, ... However, there are 2 issues of the first edition, and at least two states on the plates, with a third state in some copies of the tenth thousand of 1873. ... The issue dated 1873 always has the same make up as the second issue of 1872 ....” (Freeman). Point of issue : line 1 of p. 208 contains misspelling for that, "htat". Freeman 1144
