Hardback, 7.5 x 5 inches. Bound in black cloth, with gilt lettering to spine and blind embossed Heinemann logo to rear corner. Light brown endpapers. In very good condition. Some minor rubbing to edges, corners and boards. Spine a bit faded. Small mark to rear. Small paste-in to front endpaper inscribed by author “Greetings to the nephew of Dorothy Day. G.G.” Some foxing to last few pages and endpapers (p.264 onward.) Some darkening to top edges and a couple of spots to side else a very clean & tight copy. - An early, edgy thriller from Greene which portrays the murkier areas of London where Drover, a communist bus-driver, has been sentenced to death for killing a policeman in a political riot because he thought the policeman was going to strike his wife. A bitter irony hovers over the ensuing battles to save him. 275 pp.
