Personal account of a transcontinental journey and scientific expedition in 1903 across South America, it was not easy to find men who could stand the strain of so long a journey. The author was unable to obtain suitable officers in Brazil to go part of the journey to alleviate tedious scientific work of the expedition, therefore doing much of the work himself. The appendix includes a list of the principal plants, mammals, birds, fish, and reptiles of Brazil, and provides vocabularies of the Bororo, Apiacar, Mundurucu, and Campas or Antis Indians.
