Hardback, 8 x 5 inches. In original light brown calf leather binding. Raised banding to spine; and later handwritten spine label. In very good condition; covers heavily worn, corners bumped/chipped, edges rubbed, rubbing to spine and boards. Ends of spine chipped. Some marks to boards. Hinges cracked. Endpapers darkened around edges with neat inscription to front. Small stain to top of title and preface pages. Title also darkened at bottom corner. Some darkening to first couple of pages, the odd small mark and creased corner, else pages very clean and tight. 592pp.

Some marks to half-title pages, some darkening to edges of title pages. Inside pages overall very clean and tight throughout. Unpaginated. (Sectionised.)

A very clean and tight copy. Records of orders made by the Courts in Dorset, from the reign of Charles I. Many of the cases concern the upkeep of children, especially the illegitimate, or old people by the parish, others are for illegally selling ale. A common concern was the maintenence of roads and bridges and various people are directed to make repairs.

Corners slightly rubbed and bumped. Slight browning to endpapers. Occasional small marks and foxing spots. Else a clean and tight copy. 472pp. The author was an English barrister, police magistrate and writer. His papers adversely criticising Thomas Babington Macaulay's views of Marlborough, the massacre of Glencoe, the highlands of Scotland, Claverhouse, and William Penn were reprinted in 1861 with the title of The New Examen. Other articles, entitled 'Vindication,' and dealing with Nelson, Lady Hamilton, the Wigtown martyrs, and Lord Byron; 'Judicial Puzzles,' dealing with Elizabeth Canning, the Campden Wonder, the Annesley case, Eliza Fenning, and Spencer Cowper's case; and 'Essays on Art,' dealing with the elements of drawing, Rubens and Ruskin, George Cruikshank and John Leech, are included in this volume, Paradoxes and Puzzles: Historical, Judicial, and Literary, which appeared in 1874.
