He covers the goods traded, principles of trade and problems encountered. There are descriptions of life in South America. The maps are detailed including a very good one of the Straits of Magellan. Many photographs illustrate the book.

Corners slightly bumped and rubbed, some rubbing to edges and ends of spine. Spine fading, some minor fading to rear top edge. Some bumps and marks to front board. Endpapers darkened with bookplate to front. Frontis plate heavily foxed and darkened. Some darkening to title page. Some small marks to pages else a clean and tight copy. 374pp. With b&w photo plates and a photogravure frontis. The book describes the ex-President’s expedition into the Brazilian jungle in 1913 as a member of the Roosevelt-Rondon Scientific Expedition, co-named after its leader, Brazilian explorer Cândido Rondon. The book describes the scientific discovery, scenic tropical vistas, and exotic flora and fauna experienced during the adventure. The expedition was also charged with mapping and navigating a river over 600 miles long. An injury early in the trip caused Roosevelt to become very ill and is regarded as shortening his life.

In very good condition. Spine faded and slightly bumped at ends. boards slightly darkened with handling marks. Slight browning to map in back pocket. Most pages unopened/uncut along top edge. Else a clean and tight copy. Twenty-three years after his triumphant and disastrous conquest of the Matterhorn, Edward Whymper (1840-1911) turned his attention to the soaring Andes peaks of Ecuador. As DNB states, "From a climber’s point of view the expedition was completely successful. The summits of Chimborazo (20,948 feet) and six other mountains between 15,000 and 20,000 feet were reached for the first time. A night was spent on the top of Cotopaxi (19,613 feet), and the features of that great volcano were thoroughly studied".
