Hardback, Tall 8vo. approx 9 x 5.5 inches. Dark blue cloth, bevelled edges, gilt decorative lettering to spine and gilt monograms to spine and front, gilt line edging to front. Top edges gilt. Navy blue endpapers. In very good condition. Corners a little bumped and rubbed, some rubbing to ends of spine. rubbing and some marks to boards, removed label mark to front. Inside pages all very clean and tight throughout. Else a very good copy. --- The present work was compiled from Lady Brassey’s journals. Her travels lead her from India to Australia ( also visiting Labuan, Brunei, Borneo and the Celebes). On the way home she died and was buried at sea on 14th. Sept. 1887 north-west off Australia. The “Sunbeam” was launched in 1874, and carried on after Lady Brassey’s death, participating in a trans-Atlantic race in 1905. It was destroyed in 1930. 490 pp. (including an appendix: Voyage from Darnley Island to Port Darwin, Mauritius, Cape of Good Hope,and England ,by Lord Brassey, etc.,) 20 full-page chromo-lithographed plates, and numerous smaller ones, printed by by E. Nister (including a picture of the “Sunbeam”, Elephanta Cabes, Patiala Elephants, Religious Festival, Benares and the Sacred Ganges, Moulmein, Singapore Entrance to the Harbour, Sarawak Borneo, Fishing-Stakes, Kina Balu, Tree Ferns Australia, North Head Syndey Harbour, ant-hills Queensland,etc.,), and many wood-engraved illustrations by Edward Whymper, J. D. Cooper and G. Pearson, 1 folding coloured chart of the author’s route and 1 folding coloured map of India.

Maillart had been in Mosow, gone east and climbed on foot a 17000 foot mountain, arrived in Manchukuo where her Russian was very helpful reporting for a great Parisian daily, travelled to Harbin, then on to Peking. She wanted to return to Europe overland via Chinese Turkestan, which was closed to foreigners for the last 4 years (Sir Aurel Stein had been forced to leave in 1931), to India. She and PETER FLEMING became fellow travellers and they both wrote books about their 8 month sojourn through the Gobi and Takla Makan deserts on to the Hindu Kush.
