TOLSTOY, LEO: Resurrection, a Novel. Translated by Louise Maude. Complete and Final Revision. With a preface by Aylmer Maude and a note on the pronunciation of Russian names and additional matter contained only in "The Revised Edition". Grant Richards. London. 1903 Tall 8vo. In red limp card covers with black lettering and vignette to front. 191pp. In very good condition. Covers slightly creased. Pages darkened with occasional small marks. Else a clean and tight copy. Serving on a jury, the rich and idle Prince Nekhlyudov recognises the accused as a girl he seduced some years before. Reduced to prostitution by his seduction, the woman, although innocent, is found guilty of murder through a legal error. Seeing himself as the cause of her degradation, Nekhlyudov is overcome with remorse and resolves to reform his life. Tolstoy’s vision of redemption achieved through loving forgiveness, and his condemnation of violence dominate the novel. An intimate, psychological tale of guilt, anger, and forgiveness, Resurrection is at the same time a panoramic description of social life in Russia at the end of the nineteenth century, reflecting Tolstoy’s outrage at the social injustices of the world in which he lived.
