Orange cloth lettered in red. 235 pp. (includes an abridged version of Mary Shelley’s novel " The Last Man " a powerful novel about the annihilation of mankind, and an index). A fine copy in very good dustwrapper ( not price- clipped). No inscriptions, but on the 2 back endpapers 3 newspaper clippings have been pasted on. Her first book, published under her own name. Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley is the author of "Frankenstein". In the first part of the book, the author "gives a fresh interpretation of Mary Shelley’s life story, incorporating facts and situations made know in recent years. The second part if devoted to Mary Shelley in her neglected capacity as a writer."

Size 7.0 x 11.0 inches. In blue cloth covers with gilt to black title label on spine and blue and white thistle design to boards. Black endpapers. With black slipcase. 152pp. With six full colour plates by Beryl Cook in her inimtable style. In fine condition with very good slipcase. A very clean and tight copy. Small marks to slip case. Muriel Spark’s novel about a teacher in a Scottish girls’ school. There is a tough argument contained at its heart as to the validity of a Scottish education system which, in the 1930s, owed much to Dickens’ Gradgrind. Brodie wants her girls to learn about beauty and culture, Giotto and Da Vinci. In effect, what their teacher wants is a fresh batch of mini-Brodies, who can play out in reality the dreams she has harboured throughout her spinsterhood. This heralds her final undoing. Beautifully illustrated by Beryl Cook.
