In maroon bevelled cloth covers with gilt to spine and gilt illustration on front. All edges gilt. Brown endpapers. 546pp. Prof. ills. with many b/w steel engravings by Cruikshank, Leech and Barham. In good condition. Spine slightly faded with small creases. Covers slightly faded and stain to back. Front hinge slightly cracked. Else a clean and tight copy. Richard Harris Barham, English novelist and humorous poet, better known by his nom de plume of Thomas Ingoldsby, was born at Canterbury. The series of grotesque metrical tales known as The Ingoldsby Legends became very popular, were published in a collected form and have since passed through numerous editions. Price:

Spine slightly darkened. Slightly rubbed around edges. Corners slightly bumped. Foxing spots throughout. A couple of slight separations at gatherings. The Ingoldsby Legends are a collection of myths, legends, ghost stories and poetry supposedly written by Thomas Ingoldsby of Tappington Manor, actually a pen-name of Richard Harris Barham. Illustrated by John Leech and George Cruikshank. Although based on real legends and mythology, such as the hand of glory, they are usually deliberately humorous parodies or pastiches of medieval folklore and poetry. The best known poem is the Jackdaw of Rheims about a jackdaw who steals a cardinal's ring and is made a saint. Price:
