1 GOLDSMITH, OLIVER: The Deserted Village, A Poem.
London. Printed for W.Griffin. 1772
Tall 8vo. In blue hard card covers with leather spine and corners. 23pp. With engraved vignette on main title page. In very good condition. Spine renewed and hinges strengthened. Small marks and slight creases to covers with slight rubbing to edges. Some browning to endpapers. Owners’ inscriptions on main title and first page of dedication, dated 1812 and 1865, also on first page of poem. Obliterated inscription on back endpaper. All pages slightly darkened by age with occasional small marks. Slight stains to corners of endpapers. Seventh edition of Goldsmith’s famous poem. Goldsmith revisits Auburn, a village of which he had fond memories, and marks the depopulation brought about through the emigration of its peasant community and the enclosure movement. He mourns over the state of a society where "wealth accumulates and men decay". Using images pertaining to the land in his poem, he gives to his readers a sense of what it was like to live in the countryside during modernization and how it has destroyed the land the former inhabitants worked so hard to maintain.
