6 WAUGH, EVELYN: The Loved One. An Anglo-American Tragedy. Illustrated by Beryl Cook.
Folio Society. 1993.
Tall 8vo. In red cloth covers with gilt to maroon heart title label on spine and maroon flaming heart design to front. Patterned endpapers. With maroon slipcase. 107pp. With eight full colour plates by Beryl Cook in her inimtable style. In fine condition with near fine slipcase. A very clean and tight copy. Includes "Evelyn Waugh in California" (an extract from the Christopher Sykes biography of Waugh). Humorous classic by Evelyn Waugh satirising the extravagant funeral rites afforded to their loved ones and pets by the Americans. In the novel, a young English poet, Dennis Barlow, goes to Los Angeles to live with his uncle, Sir Francis Hinsley, who works at a film studio. When he is fired by the studio, Sir Francis commits suicide, and Dennis goes to the imposing necropolis called Whispering Glades (its details clearly inspired by Forest Lawn, which mesmerized Waugh) to arrange for the funeral. While there, he meets Aimée Thanatogenos, a cosmetician, and competes for her attention with the sinister embalmer Mr. Joyboy. Little did Aimée know that conflicts would soon erupt involving Mr. Joyboy and Mr. Barlow.
