	1	YONGE, CHARLOTTE M.: Countess Kate. Faber and Faber. London. 1948 1st thus. Tall 8vo. In purple cloth covers with gilt to spine. With dustwrapper. 216pp. Prof ills in b/w by Gwen Raverat. In very good condition with good dustwrapper (dw; Spine slightly faded. Rubbed and chipped along edges. Small marks. Not price clipped). Mild foxing to edges. Slight lean. Else a clean and tight copy. Originally published in 1832, the novel describes how 11-year-old Kate is suddenly elevated to the peerage and taken into the care of her two spinster aunts. They determine to ‘make a lady’ of Kate, but she runs away, although she is ultimately returned to her aunts’ care. However, and finally, Kate is ‘rescued’ by her great-uncle and his wife who create a happier home for the orphaned child. Price: 22.00 GBP

Considered her masterpiece, the book tells of the thirteen orphaned children and their struggles to survive in Victorian times.
