1 BURNETT, FRANCES HODGSON: A Lady of Quality, Being a most curious, hitherto unknown history, as related by Mr. Isacc Bickerstaff but not presented to the World of Fashion through the pages of The Tatler, and now for the first time written down.
Frederick Warne & Co. London 1896 1st edition. 
In green cloth covers with gilt to spine and front. 368pp.4pp.cat. With b/w frontis by Lancelot Speed. In very good condition. Spine slightly rubbed at extremeties. Small marks on back. Mild foxing to edges. Slight browning to endpapers. A couple of slight separations at gatherings. After their mother's death a youth desolate and strange indeed lay before them. A spinster who was a poor relation was the only person of respectable breeding who ever came near them. To save herself from genteel starvation, she had offered herself for the place of governess to them, though she was fitted for the position neither by education nor character. By the author of "The Secret Garden" and "Little Lord Fauntleroy".

Tall 8vo. In brown cloth covers with gilt to spine and front. Patterned endpapers. Top edge gilt. 320pp. In very good condition. Slight lean. mild foxing to edges. Slight browning to endpapers. Else a clean and tight copy. The Lancashire village of Riggan is dominated by the pit, for it not only provides employment to most of those who live there, but is also a focus for the community's hopes and fears, and the place where friendships are made and lost. Joan Lowrie, one of the pit girls, has endured hardship, and beatings from her father, for as long as she can remember, but her pride, determination to rise above her lot, and natural intelligence make her stand apart from the other girls. First published in 1878, this is the first novel by the author of The Secret Garden and Little Lord Fauntleroy.
