Tall 8vo. In black cloth covers with gilt to spine. With illustrated dustwrapper. 535pp. With b/w photographs. In very good condition with very good dustwrapper (dw; Slightly rubbed along top edge. Not price clipped). Pencil inscription to front endpaper. Else a very clean and tight copy. Remembered today as ‘Supermac’, Britain’s most urbane and unflappable statesman, Macmillan , for much of his life, was an insecure and deeply unhappy man. Wounded in the trenches, he entered politics after WWI and his support for the unemployed and hatred of appeasement kept him out of office until WWII. Macmillan emerged as the most powerful politician of the post-war years. This volume ends with his entry into Number 10 in 1956.

The author looks at the collapse of France in 1870 and the savasge sef-destruction of the Paris Commune. He includes first hand accounts from official observers, private diarists and letter writers.
