Size 4.0 x 6.5 inches. In dark blue cloth covers with gilt to spine and front. In very good condition. Spine slightly faded. Small marks to front. Pencil notes to back endpapers. Foxing to title pages. Else a clean and tight copy. 377pp. With b/w portrait vignette to main title page. Collected essays of Joseph Addison.

Hardbacks, 8 volumes complete. Size approx 7 x 4 inches. In brown full calf leather bindings with red morocco spine labels lettered in gilt. Speckled edges. Plain endpapers. Generally in very good conditions. Corners bumped and edges rubbed, corners slightly chipped. Rubbing and darkening to spines and some nicks/chips to ends of spines. Some minor rubbing to boards. Slight darkening to endpapers. Neat bookplates to front endpapers “A. Frank Stammers.” Some slight darkening, One or two minor spots, else inside pages all very clean and tight throughout. ---- The Spectator was a daily publication of 1711–12, founded by Joseph Addison and Richard Steele in England after they met at Charterhouse School. Eustace Budgell, a cousin of Addison's, also contributed to the publication. Each 'paper', or 'number', was approximately 2,500 words long, and the original run consisted of 555 numbers. These were collected into seven volumes. The paper was revived without the involvement of Steele in 1714, appearing thrice weekly for six months, and these papers when collected formed the eighth volume. Illustrated with engraved decorative title pages and 8 frontispieces. Decorative scrollwork separates articles.
