Clarendon Press. 1926 
Tall 8vo. In black cloth covers with gilt to spine and front. 531pp. With b/w plates and illustrations in text. In very good condition. Spine slightly faded and rubbed at ends. Front hinge slightly cracked. Slight browning to endpapers. Else a clean and tight copy. "This vivid portrait of an exuberant era peopled by forceful and colourful personalities is a social and political history of the eighteenth century that is a happy blend of information and entertaining illustrations." The author considers the years from 1783 to belong to a different epoch and so ends the political narrative at that year.

In very good condition with very good dustwrappers (dw; spines slightly darkened. Vol II slightly rubbed along edges. Not price clipped). Some damp staining to covers, not affecting inside. Mild foxing to edges. Else clean and tight copies. An incomparable introduction to the England of Dr. Johnson, with 27 chapters, by different scholars, devoted to social history, the arts, science, costume, agriculture, business, sports and many other subjects.
