Extracts from the journals of three travellers in the Highlands of Scotland in the eighteenth Century. The area at the time was remote and bleak, the people seen as hostile, almost savage, and English was rarely spoken.

Features the Georgian "New Town" part of Edinburgh, built in the brief space of 75 years, from 1766 to 1840. The author has studied in detail how it was planned, financed, and brought into being and compares it to aspects of the Old Town.
