In green cloth covers with gilt to brown morocco title label on spine. Top edge gilt, decorated gilt floral endpapers. 336pp. In very good condition. Spine slightly darkened. Small marks to covers. Mild foxing to edges. Owner’s neat inscription on first blank page. Else a clean and tight copy. The Broken Road, first published in 1907, is a gripping romance of the frontier considered the real India by many British writers and the preferred setting for Raj novels of romantic adventure. Through the relationship between its two main characters Dick Linforth scion of a family of empire builders and Shere Ali the prince of Chiltistan it explores the sense of duty that drove successive generations of British men to sacrifice their lives for the goals of the empire and the contentious issue of educating Indian princes in England.

Slight browning to endpapers.Else a clean and tight copy. History of the Royal Exchange Assurance. In two parts covering The House and The Business. The first three chapters describe the buildings, two destroyed by fire and the last four describe the business of Assurance, starting with the South Sea Bubble.
