Spines slightly darkened and bumped at ends.Small marks to covers. Vol II has small bumps to front edges and vignette to front is slightly faded. Marks to front endpapers where old label has been removed. Owner’s neat inscription to half title pages. Scarce. The author was a Captain in the United States Navy. As stated in the Preface, "The present work concludes the series of 'The Influence of Sea Power upon History' as originally framed in the conception of the author." Mahan argued that sea power was vital to the rise of empires and great nations; his views were a great influence on Theodore Roosevelt, who built up the U.S. Navy at the turn of the century, and launched "The Great White Fleet" in 1905.
