Size 8.75 x 13.75 inches. Re-bound in speckled grey hard card binding with paper title label to spine. In very good condition. Re-bound. Pages slightly marked. Else a clean and tight copy. 154pp. A record of the evidence taken by a Select Committee enquiring into accusations of Bribery at the Election at Shaftesbury, in 1774, at which the accuser had been an unsuccessful candidate. The many witnesses give varying testimony as to events and characters and whether they were offered money to vote for particular candidates. At that election one candidate, Hans Winthrop Mortimer, stood independently of the established interests in the town and, having been easily defeated, petitioned to have the result overturned and produced copious evidence of corruption. Thomas Rumbold and Francis Sykes were both shown to have bribed at a rate of 20 guineas (£21) a man, the total spent amounting to several thousand pounds; worse, the magistrates of the town were implicated in distributing this largesse.
