Many head & tail pieces which are from pen and ink drawings by William Scott. 17 pp. / 163 pp. Top edge red.

Gilt lined outer board edges, and gilt decorated inner board edges. Marbled endpapers. In very good condition. Some rubbing and small nicks to corners and edges of boards. Binders stamp to top edge of front endpaper “W.J. Mansell.” 496pp. With Thirty b&w illustrations on steel by George Cruikshank. The first and best book of Francis Edward Smedley (1818–1864), based on the author's few months as one of the private pupils of the Revd Charles Millett at Brighton, Sussex. The book was begun in May 1846 as a sketch in Sharpe's London Magazine entitled 'Scenes from the life of a private pupil', and continued until May 1848. It was then issued in sixteen monthly parts and in book form in 1850. The book was popular, and its early chapters are still fresh and funny, with stories of practical jokes and teasing.
