In good condition. Some minor rubbing on edges. Bookplate inside hard covers (University of London). Paper wrapper a little rubbed on edges, with a few faint marks. Very good for its age. A few pages very slightly creased at bottom corner. Generally clean & tight. A rare example of a report on wild life in the Bering Straits and the factors influencing the decline of the sea-otters with recommendations to remedy this. The original report is bound into hard card covers, keeping the original paper covers.

Cloth reinforcement to hinges between endpapers; endpapers slightly darkened, neat inscription to front. Page edges rough cut. Inside pages very clean and tight throughout. Very scarce to find with original dustwrappers. - An up-to-date, complete, systematic account of Egyptian birds from the earliest times to the present, superseding other treatises on the subject. The work was completed by Col. Meinertzhagen on the death of Nicoll, who was Assistant Director of the Zoological Gardens at Giza. Ripley p. 209. Anker (Bird Books and Bird Art) 363. Nicoll lived for 18 years in Egypt and made an unrivalled collection of Egyptian birds, now in the Museum of the Giz Zoological Gardens. He intended to issue a work that was to replace Shelley's 'A Handbook to the Birds of Egypt', 1872, which was no longer up to date. The author was approached by Nicoll's widow in 1926, who asked him to complete the work which was then about two thirds completed. The project was sponsored by the Egyptian government and published under their authority. The result is an invaluable and important reference source on this subject. Frontis.portrait, 6 fine plates from photogravures, 31 fine color plates from paintings by G. E. Lodge, Roland Green, H. Gronvold, Thorburn. 3 folding color maps, many text illus, tables, bibliog, appendices of bird lists. 700pp.
