Size 16 x 12 inches. Hardback In blue pebbled cloth with gilt lettering and banding to spine. In very good condition. Boards rubbed. Ends of spine chipped, nicks to corners. Edges rubbed. Endpapers slightly darkened. 5 pages have torn top corner at p167. Some odd mild foxing marks to page edges. Otherwise pages very clean and tight throughout. Else a very clean and tight copy. 708pp. With many b/w illustrations with coloured drawings by R.Caldecott in Summer Edition at back. Some other large colour plates issued as supplements, including 17th Lancers, ‘Delia in Town’, ‘Delia in the Country’ by G. Morland, a cartoon of making a tennis court. Also large b/w plates some double page, illustrating military expeditions in India and Burma, Monte Carlo, Horse riding, including Side-saddle, Franz Liszt. Many period advertisements, including fashion, cycling, Pears Soap, patent medicines, etc. The main interest in this volume is the first appearance of Thomas Hardy’s ‘The Mayor of Casterbridge’, in 20 instalments with illustrations by Robert Barnes. “The novel was considerably rewritten before its publication in book form with significant alterations in plot and many deletions” (Purdy). Each instalment from 2 January to 15 May 1886.

Gilt paneling to boards with floral details to corners. Marbled endpapers. In very good condition. Modern binding, a couple of minor nicks to rear board. Some light foxing to top edges of pages nr front, and some minor spotting to edges, else inside pages all very clean and tight throughout. Examination...shows that his widow...and others, not only deleted numerous passages, but inserted others, some of them extremely significant. This edition aims to be as Hardy left it.
