In very good condition with very good dustwrapper (DW darkened at spine, some rubbing and minor nicks to edges, in protective sleeve.) Cloth clean, some partial darkening to endpapers with neat inscription to front “Brian Chadwick”, else a very clean and tight copy. 481pp. With a b&w photo portrait and b&w diagrams in text.

Rubbing to edges, top corners nicked and ends of spine split. Spine slightly darkened. Some minor marks and rubbing to boards. Hinges slightly cracked between endpapers. A couple of very minor spots and handling markls else pages very clean and tight. xx + 352 pp +32 pp cat. (dated July 1887.) With 15 b&w illustrations in text. Only about 2,000 copies of this work was sold during Darwin’s lifetime, and perhaps 4,000 before the end of the century (Freeman). Freeman1280

Hardback, 7.5 x 5 inches. In green blind stamped cloth with gilt lettering and decoration to spine, blind paneled boards. Brown endpapers. In very good condition. Nice bright cloth. Bumps to corners and ends of spine with some minor marks to rear. Edges of endpapers faded and hinges slightly cracked. Bookseller stamp to verso of endpaper “Maglachlan & Stewart, Edinburgh.” Some darkening to endpapers and title page, else inside pages very clean and tight throughout. 7 heliotype plates & 21 other illustrations.vi + 374 pp + Cat.4 pp.(dated November, 1872) + 28pp (later cat) dated July 1882. “This is an important member of the evolutionary set, and it was written, in part at least, as a confutation of the idea that the facial muscles of expression in man were a special endowment”. “... Murray published 7,000 copies of the first edition on November 26, 1872, ... However, there are 2 issues of the first edition, and at least two states on the plates, with a third state in some copies of the tenth thousand of 1873. ... The issue dated 1873 always has the same make up as the second issue of 1872 ....” (Freeman). Point of issue : line 1 of p. 208 contains misspelling for that, "htat". Freeman 1144

Some minor spotting after endpapers and to cat pages, else inside pages clean and tight. Rare. x + 300 pp. / Cat.32pp.(dated Jan. 1876). 38 B&W woodcut within text. Of the first edition in 1862 there were probably only 2000 copies printed. In the second edition in 1877, a paper which Darwin published in 1869, was incorporated. The text of this was considerable altered . The title is condensed by the omission of “On” and “British and Foreign”, as well as the last phrase. Freeman 801

Cloth soiled at leading top corners, rubbed on edges and a little on boards and spine. Endpapers oiled at edges, rear endpaper chipped at top corner. “F. Hockliffe, Bedford” bookseller label to front, hinges cracked between endpapers (glue repair to rear), Some dark marks to edges of last index pages else pages very clean and tight throughout. Else a very good 1st edition copy. --- The first edition was published on Nov. 6th., 1880 and 1,500 copies were sold. In this issue there are 2 lines of errata which are corrected in the second thousand of the same year (this copy). In this issue, the advertisements may be the same as those in the first, but are more often dated November 1880. In these both and the 3rd. issue the title on the spine differs slightly from the one on the title-page. The book was not reprinted in England after the year of Darwin’s death until modern facsimile editions appeared. SCARCE , especially in the original cloth. 196 wood-engr.ills; Hf.title. Adverts.on verso of hf.title. pp.x/592 pp; Cat.32pp.(dated Jan 1879.).
